Foundations Programme

The Foundations Programme consists of a number of self-study plans, a one-day Workshop and an Examination which from 2010 replace the Professional Competence Examination 1 (PCE 1) and are collectively referred to as Foundations.

The aim of Foundations is to assess a provisional member’s understanding and appreciation of their role as a professional within the Institute through the following content:

  • the authority for and the structure of the accounting profession:
    • the legislation (Act) establishing the Institute
    • the rules, governance and management of the Institute
    • the structure of the accounting profession in New Zealand and internationally
  • ethical issues in business and the profession
  • current issues of a non-technical nature influencing the accounting profession.

 

Those seeking to join any of the colleges of the Institute must demonstrate competency in the above areas by successfully completing the Foundations which consists of:

  • Foundations study plans and Ethics in Action CD-ROM (approximately 50 hours of self study)
  • 6 hour Foundations workshop (including assessments worth 25% of total marks)
  • 2 1/2 hour written examination (worth 75% of total marks).

 

Foundations is offered in April and October in various locations in New Zealand. It is a requirement that there is a minimum of 20 confirmed enrolments for the programme to be held in any specific location.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible to enrol in Foundations you must:

  • be a provisional member of the Institute
  • have completed 12 months of general practical experience, approved by the Institute.
