Fellowships for 13 distinguished members

Congratulations to the 13 Chartered Accountants who received Fellowships
at the Institute's AGM in Auckland on 25 October. Fellowships are
conferred by the Institute each year for outstanding contribution to the
accountancy profession and/or service to the community.
AUCKLAND
Frank Claridge
Frank has been made a Fellow in recognition of his involvement in
the management of and service to an association that has objectives
relating to his chosen business or profession, and for outstanding
service to the community which reflects positively on the profession. He
was treasurer of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind for 20
years to 2003. He has been a member of the Public Benefit Entity Working
Group of the Financial Reporting Standards Board (FSRB) since 2005 and a
member of the Not-for-Profit Sector Advisory Committee since 2006. In
2000 the Minister of Finance appointed him to the Working Party on the
Registration, Reporting and Monitoring of Charities, where he served for
the 2001/2002 year. In 2005 he was appointed to the initial board of the
Charities Commission. Frank has been involved with many not-for-profit
and charitable organisations in senior management and governance roles
since 1962. In 2002 he was named Trustee of the Year by the New Zealand
Trustees Association.
Craig Fisher
Craig received his Fellowship for service to the Institute and the
profession, and excellence and acknowledgment in research, teaching and
writing, reflecting positively on the profession. Craig obtained his
Certificate of Public Practice in 1996, has been a member of the
Professional Standards Board since 1999, and is currently its chair.
Craig is a co-author of Brooker's Practical Auditing Manual, chairman
and director of Hayes Knight Ltd and a partner of Hayes Knight Audit.
Craig represents the Institute on the International Auditing and
Assurance Standards Board's National Standards Setters Group and the
Trans-Tasman Accounting and Audit Standards Advisory Group (a government
appointment). He is an approved auditor for the Office of the Auditor
General (OAG), which allows him to sign opinions on behalf of the OAG.
Craig is also a member of the Institute of Directors and is heavily
involved in the not-for-profit sector.
David Morrow
David has been honoured for his service to the Institute and the
profession. David has been a member of the Admissions Board since June
2000 and has chaired it since March 2003. During his time as chair,
David has overseen a number of projects and significant proposals. These
include the CA competency project, CA academic policy review, a review
of the CA admissions policy model, recognition of ICAEW and ICAS
training for Institute candidates, the retirement and re-admissions
review, revisions of the Certificate of Public Practice requirements and
the Associate Chartered Accountant College re-launch (including the
special entry proposals). David has also been involved in the review of
non-member partner guidelines. He is a partner at Ernst & Young.
CANTERBURY-WESTLAND
Andrew Thompson
Andrew has been made a Fellow in recognition of service to the
Institute and the profession. Andrew has been a Chartered Accountant
since May 1991. He is currently commercial manager for Fulton Hogan's
South Island business, having been the CFO at Zespri and before that
finance and administration manager at Sealord. After returning to
Christchurch in 2002 he took on a corporate strategy and development
role with Mainpower, a result of which the company developed renewable
generation opportunities including a wind farm in North Canterbury.
Andrew has been involved in national and branch activity at the
Institute for the past nine years. In his role as chair of the National
Professional Development Committee he has been very involved in
assessing the delivery of e-learning to our members. Andrew has been a
member of Council since 2002, first representing Auckland and then
Canterbury. He was the Young Chartered Accountant of the Year in
1999.
Stephen Tubbs
Stephen received his Fellowship for service to the Institute and
the profession, and excellence and high achievement in his career, which
reflects positively on the profession. Stephen has a long history of
serving on branch committees. He is a past convenor of the Insolvency
Special Interest Group. Stephen has a high profile within the insolvency
field, in which he is regarded an expert. He has acted as a receiver for
all New Zealand's major banks, and has acted in a number of high-profile
receiverships. Stephen is on BDO Spicers' national management board, and
is their national director of Business Recovery Services.
HAWKE'S BAY
Brian Martin
Brian received his Fellowship for excellence and outstanding achievement
in his career, and outstanding service to commerce and the community
reflecting positively on the profession. Brian has served in a range of
governance roles for listed companies and community organisations. He
served as a trustee of the Eastern and Central Community Trust between
1991 and 1999, where he was instrumental in establishing the trust's
investment and governance structures. Brian's current directorships
include Unison Networks Ltd (chairman), Rural Equities Ltd, Mission
Estate Winery and Wakefield Health Ltd. He is a past director of
Williams & Kettle Ltd, Eastern Equities Ltd, Royston Hospital Ltd
and New Zealand Rural Properties Ltd.
MARLBOROUGH-NELSON
Joanne Scott
Joanne received her Fellowship for service to the Institute and the
profession, excellence and high achievement in her career, and
excellence and acknowledgement in research, teaching and writing which
reflects positively on the profession. Joanne began her career at the
Treasury and subsequently taught at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of
Technology. Between 1996 and 2001 she worked for the Public Sector
Committee of the International Federation of Accountants, where she was
involved in standard-setting for the public sector, and the primary
author of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board's
guidance document on government entities transitioning to accrual
accounting. From 1997 until 2002 Joanne was also a consultant at Public
Sector Performance (NZ). She is currently a contractor supporting the
work of the Financial Reporting Standards Board.
NORTHLAND
Peter Byers
Peter received his Fellowship for excellence and high achievement
in his career, and outstanding service to the community, which reflects
positively on the profession. Peter founded the VeraSage Institute in
New Zealand and Australia, a think-tank devoted to implementing value
pricing and total quality service to professional service firms. He has
served the Order of St John for over 30 years, given 25 years' service
to the local Pioneer and Historical Village, seven to the national
Riding for the Disabled organisation and was a foundation director of
Hauora Ngatihine Healthcare, a community health service organisation
based in Northland. Peter also worked for the Bay of Islands
Kindergarten Association on a pro bono basis for 25 years.
OTAGO
Bill Thomson
Bill received his Fellowship for excellence and high achievement in his
career, and outstanding service to the community which reflects
positively on the profession. Bill is chair of the Community Trust of
Otago and founding chairman of the Enterprise Clutha Trust. He is a
founding trustee and treasurer of the Life Education Trust for the
Otago/Southland area. Bill is also a past president and founding
director of the Clutha District Chamber of Commerce, and served seven
years as chair of the Clutha District Business Advisory Foundation
before stepping down in 2003. In 1999 Bill received the Clutha District
Council Community Service Award. As a business mentor, professional
advisor and community advocate he is highly regarded by his colleagues
and members of the South Otago community.
WAIKATO-BAY OF PLENTY
Howard Davey
Howard received his Fellowship for excellence and high achievement in
his career, service to the Institute and the profession, and excellence
and acknowledgement in research, teaching and writing. He served on the
Professional Competence sub-committee between 1997 and 1998, working on
the development of post-academic entry requirements. He has been a
facilitator for the Professional Accounting School and Professional
Competency Examination for ABEL. He is currently a member of the
Admissions Board and chair of the Academic Committee. Howard was a
lecturer at Massey University between 1979 and 1983 and has been at the
University of Waikato since 1986, where he is Professor of Accounting in
the School of Management Studies.
Paul Hickson
Paul received his Fellowship for involvement in the management of and/or
service to an association having objectives relating to his chosen
business or profession, and outstanding service to the community which
reflects positively on the profession. Paul served as a director of Bay
of Plenty Fruitpackers Ltd 1988-2000 (including as vice-chairman from
1992), and as an elected member of NZ Kiwifruit Growers Inc between 1993
and 2001. He has been a full member of the New Zealand Institute of
Primary Industry Management since 2002, and was an affiliated member
from 1991. Paul has served as a trustee of the Arohanui Art and
Education Trust since 2000 and is on the Smart Economy Action Group for
the Western Bay of Plenty. He is a director of the Bay of Plenty Cricket
Association and was awarded the Northern Districts Cricket Allan McBride
Memorial Trophy for outstanding services to junior cricket in
2000-2001.
WANGANUI
Rex McKinnon
Rex has been made a Fellow for service to the Institute and the
profession. Rex has been a member of Council since 1998 and also serves
on the National Public Practice Committee. He is a past chair of
Markhams MRI New Zealand Limited, current chair and a director of
Markhams Wanganui Ltd, and a past chair of the Institute's Wanganui
Branch. He is also a past president of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce,
has been a director of Wanganui Economic Development Corporation and is
the chair of the Wanganui Air Ambulance Trust.
WELLINGTON
Terry McLaughlin
Terry received his Fellowship for service to the Institute and the
profession, and excellence and high achievement in his career which
reflects positively on the profession. Terry is currently Executive
Director of Audit New Zealand. He is a member of the Institute's
Executive Board, having been co-opted in 2006. Before moving to Audit
New Zealand, he was Assistant Auditor-General in the Parliamentary Group
at the Office of the Auditor-General. Terry's experience in the private
sector includes six years at Ernst & Young in New Zealand and the
United Kingdom. He was a member of the Professional Standards Board from
1998 to 2005, latterly as the deputy chair. He is a past member of the
National Professional Development Committee and the Wellington Public
Sector Committee.
